Sapience by Benoit Marguet
Sapience, an extraordinary luxury cuvee Champagne, is produced by Benoit Marguet working in collaboration with some of the region’s finest growers to source grapes.
The 2006 vintage is composed of ⅓ Pinot Meunier and ⅔ Chardonnay, sourced from growers each of which is famed for the quality of both their fruit and their wines. All are fully organic.
Vincent Laval (see elsewhere in this portfolio) owns several hectares in the Premier Cru village of Cumieres, on the lower flank of the Montagne de Reims. He provides the Pinot Meunier for this cuvee.
David Leclapart, a famed grower and winemaker on the Montagne de Reims, has been one of the region’s most vocal advocates for organic vineyard and winery practices, and has been certified Biodynamic since 2000. Leclapart provides the Chardonnay for Sapience.
The source vines are all 35-40 years old giving tremendous depth of fruit, and Marguet vinifies the wine in new oak with zero addition of SO2. The wine is vinified and aged for two years in Bordeaux barrels before bottling, then aged on the secondary lees for about five more years before degorgement, then dosed at a miniimal 3g/l sweetness and aged for an additional two years resting before release.
The 2006, the first vintage of this extraordinary project, is one of the finest “Tete de Cuvee” Champagnes produced, at any price. Pale gold with notes of brioche and dried white fruit in the nose, an effortless balance of fruit and minerality, a perfect pairing of intensity with the elegance of its minimal dosage, and an impressive finish that lingers on and on… this is truly GREAT wine.
In 2007, Marguet collaborated with Benoit Lahaye, a Biodynamic grower and noted winemaker located in the Grand Cru village of Bouzy, to add Pinot Noir to the cuvee. With this addition, the 2007 is ⅓ of each variety, all from some of the most famed organic/biodynamic growers in Champagne. Expected release of the 2007 is late spring or early summer 2016.
