Bodegas Gancedo is a small family winery located in Quilos, Bierzo. Gines and his wife Juani have 12 Has (30 acres) of old Mencia and Godello vineyards in small plots in the foothills of the mountains surrounding Quilos. Most of the vines (80%) are at least 60 years old.
Gines, the winemaker, practices traditional viticulture with an incredible passion and attention to detail. His practices also ensure respect for the land.
Almost all of the work is done manually and no pesticides or chemical fertilizers are used. At an average production of about 2 lbs per vine, the yield is dramatically lower than the average in the appellation. The harvest is done by hand in small crates and then quickly taken to the winery. The grapes are carefully fermented in small tanks plot by plot as they reach optimum maturity.
At the winery all the work is done by gravity, without the use of any pumps.
VARIETAL: 100% Mencia, 40+ year-old bush vines.
