Wines/Portugal/Alentejo/Terras d'Alter

organic, vegan

In the sunny South of Portugal, just inland from the capital Lisbon in the region to the south of the Tejo river valley as it  makes its way from Spain out towards the Atlantic stretches a region known for its gentle hills, warm dry climate, cork-oak trees and grape vines.  This is the Alentejo ("across the Tejo.")

In the far inland sector bordering Spain, a district known as the Alto Alentejo, lies the village of Alter de Chao, and Terras d'Alter's vineyards lie on the nearby gentle hillsides.

Terras d'Alter is an exciting producer dedicated to making superb varietal wines as well as blends from a combination of native Portuguese and other Mediterranean grape varieties.  Founded in 2004 as a joint venture between Sociedade Agrícola das Antas and Sociedade Agrícola do Monte Barrão, family firms with centuries of agricultural history in Alto Alentejo, in cooperation with Peter Bright, world renowned oenologist, Alter works with traditional Portuguese varietals sourced primarily from the Antas and Monte Barrão vineyards in Fronteira and Alter do Chão, Peter Bright masterfully coaxes intense flavors of ripe berry and spice from the grapes grown under the Portuguese sun and blends them in the Company’s state of the art winery built in 2008 to create approachable wines.

Extraordinary quality and extraordinary values, these will change the way you think about Portuguese wines and winemaking!
